Elizabethtown
Samuel Haycraft, Jr, in his history of Elizabethtown, wrote in 1869:  "For who can tell what Elizabethtown will be, with her delightful location, her enterprising and energetic population, her railroad facilities, her fine water, and her surroundings of intelligent and gentlemanly farmers, the best fruit county in the world,
and her future manufacturers that must spring up."

Elizabethtown was founded in 1797 and sits in Hardin County. Named to honor Andrew Hynes wife, Elizabethtown was legally established on July 4, 1797. Hardin County was established in 1793 and named after Colonel John Hardin, an Indian on a peace mission who was killed by Native Americans.

The opening of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad brought prosperity to the community, becoming one of the most important stops along the railroad and a strategic point during the Civil War. General George Custer lead troops from 1871-1873 to suppress the Ku Klux Klan and Carpet Baggers and break up illegal distilleries which were flourishing after the Civil War.

Today Elizabethtown, with a population over 20,000 people, is still a growing community.  The industrial and commercial economy is growing.  Hardin Memorial Hospital, Rehab Centers and good doctors make us a regional medical center for surrounding counties.  With beautiful countryside and rich natural resources, Elizabethtown is the place to be and raise a family.  Elizabethtown is located 44 miles  outside of Louisville and 131 miles north of Nashville.  Elizabethtown also lies at the intersection of three major highways, Interstate 65, the Bluegrass Parkway and the Western Kentucky Parkway.

Hardin County is blessed with other cities and towns:   Radcliff with a population of over 20,000 sets just outside of Fort Knox, Rineyville, Vine Grove, Upton, Sonora, Glendale, West Point and surrounding areas.
